Did you know ?
Azurite is formed from the oxidation of copper ores. Over a long time it absorbs water,(it changes into the mineral malachite.) so the two are sometimes mined together, creating a beautiful blue stone with the green Malachite .
Azurite was first used as a pigment in Egypt. It was used to make a paint pigment called Egyptian Blue. In the Middle Ages, azurite was ground, washed and sieved to form a pigment called Prussian Blue. It became the most widely used pigment in Middle Age paintings.
The hardness of azurite, 3.5 to 4
Specific gravity, 3.7 to 3.8
Azurite is a secondary copper mineral and develops in the zone of alteration, in all types of hydrothermal replacement deposits, where it commonly occors with malachite, limonite, and chalcopyrite.
